WILD CRAB, NARROW-LEAF CRAB

Differing from the preceding species chiefly in having leaves lanceolate, oblong, or narrowly oblong, blunt-toothed, more or less blunt-tipped, and wedge-shaped at the base.

Branches and branchlets bearing prominent horizontal lenticels. Petioles or the base of the leaf blade bearing a gland or pair of glands in all species except P. americana. Leaf scars raised; bundle scars 3. Buds with about 6 scales; true terminal buds absent in plums and present in cherries and peach. Plums usually with some spine-tipped spur branches. Species of plums variable, with intermediates occurring.
